INTRO: The United Nations says a French U-N worker was shot by gunmen in southeastern Afghanistan and later died of her wounds. V-O-A's Michael Kitchen reports from neighboring Pakistan that passersby grabbed the attackers and they are now in police custody.

TEXT: Two attackers reportedly rode up to the woman's car on a motorcycle and opened fire.

Maki Shinohara, a spokeswoman for the United Nations refugee agency, says the victim was a Betina Goislard, a 29-year-old French citizen working with the agency.

Her Afghan driver was injured in the attack, which took place in the southeastern town of Ghazni.

Ms. Shinohara says the attackers likely knew their victim was a U-N worker.

/// SHINOHARA ACT ///

They were in a clearly marked vehicle in the center of the city. The shots came from the passenger side where she was sitting.

/// END ACT ///

She says witnesses subdued the assailants, who are now being questioned by police.

Ms. Goislard is the first foreign U-N worker to be killed in Afghanistan since the former Taleban government was ousted in 2001, although several Afghan aid workers have been murdered. (SIGNED)
