Zimbabwe's Instability Threatens Africa's Security

A British-based research group says Zimbabwe's political and economic instability poses one of the most serious threats to Africa's security.

In its annual report on world security, released Thursday, the International Institute of Strategic Studies says that peaceful change in Zimbabwe is almost inconceivable under current circumstances. The report says as long as President Robert Mugabe remains in power in Zimbabwe, food shortages, political repression and serious economic decline will continue.

The Institute also criticizes other African leaders, particularly South African President Thabo Mbeki, for failing to act following Mr. Mugabe's re-election in a poll widely condemned as flawed.

The report also warns of problems in other African nations, including Kenya and Somalia, where it says political and economic disintegration contribute to overall insecurity.

But, the report finds hope elsewhere on the continent, emphasizing the recent moves towards peace in Angola, calm in the Horn and Sudan's apparent willingness to end its international isolation.

The group also says the global war on terrorism is likely to result in more financial support and international attention for Africa to deal with problems such as grinding poverty, disease and political instability. Some African nations, including Sudan and Somalia, are considered likely hosts for terrorist groups.

World events are historic steps in the purpose and plan of God. The outcome of history is up to man - restricted only by sovereign limits imposed by God. The future events are consequences resulting from mankind exercising the gift of intelligence and free will in response to situations developing from past events. This human response is either synchronized to His Will or in rebellion to His Will. Behavior is either the manifestation of love or it's opposite - hate. As Christians we should be involved through loving (caring attitude and behavior for others) actions empowered by prayer, understanding, and submission to His Will.
