May 2002 UN Pulls Out Of Mogadishu VOA News 7 May 2002 14:17 UTC The United Nations has suspended its operations in Mogadishu, Somalia, in connection with the kidnapping of one of its employees. The U.N. says it is pulling out because the employee's captors have refused to release him. Mohamed Ali Abukar, an employee of the U.N. Development Program, was abducted by unidentified gunmen on his way home April 28. The U.N. agency's representative in Somalia, Maxwell Gaylord, said in a statement that staff members have grown increasingly concerned about Mr. Abukar because he has a serious medical condition. This is the second kidnapping of a U.N. employee in three months. Earlier this year, gunmen abducted a Somali representative of the U.N. agency for children, UNICEF. He was later released. The United Nations provides a range of humanitarian services in Somalia, including health care, teacher training and water sanitation. Somalia has been plagued by violence and has operated without an official government since the ouster of former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. World events are historic steps in the purpose and plan of God. The outcome of history is up to man - restricted only by sovereign limits imposed by God. The future events are consequences resulting from mankind exercising the gift of intelligence and free will in response to situations developing from past events. This human response is either synchronized to His Will or in rebellion to His Will. Behavior is either the manifestation of love or it's opposite - hate. As Christians we should be involved through loving (caring attitude and behavior for others) actions empowered by prayer, understanding, and submission to His Will. | |||
