May 2002 Powell Phones Berlusconi in Bid to End Bethlehem Siege VOA News 7 May 2002 18:48 UTC  
Under the deal, Israel says it will lift the five-week siege if 13 Palestinian militants holed up in the church are exiled to Italy. But Italy says it was not consulted about the deal and has strongly objected to the exile proposal.
Earlier Tuesday, Israel said the deal was stalled because no country is willing to take the 13 militants.
Israeli forces surrounded the Christian shrine last month, after about 200 people, including an undisclosed number of armed Palestinians, took refuge there. Some information for this report provided by AP and AFP.

The
State Department says U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has telephoned
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, in a bid to end Italy's objections to
a deal that would resolve the Israeli siege of Bethlehem's Church of the
Nativity. 
A State Department spokesman did not reveal
the results of the Powell-Berlusconi discussion. 
Under the proposed arrangement, another 26 Palestinians barricaded
in the church would be sent to the Gaza Strip and face trial in Palestinian
courts. About 80 other people still inside the church, including civilians and
clerics, would be set free immediately.
