May 2002 At Least 18 Dead In Tunisia Plane Crash VOA News 7 May 2002 18:55 UTC  
The Boeing 737 plane was trying to land at Tunis airport Tuesday when it came down in a hilly area several kilometers away. Weather was foggy and rainy at the time. The plane's pilot is among the survivors. At least 25 passengers were injured and hospitalized. The flight originated in Cairo with 55 passengers on board and eight crew members. Tunisian officials say the plane's landing gear failed shortly before the crash. Tunisia's official news agency says the airport control tower lost contact with the plane just after receiving a distress call from the pilot.
