Violence

A military curfew
remains in place in parts of the Indian city of Ahmedabad, after a new round of
Hindu-Muslim violence that claimed seven more lives since early
Sunday.
Police in the
riot-torn capital city of Gujarat state say two Muslims were stoned to death
Monday by a Hindu mob. At least five others, including a three-year-old Muslim
boy, died in the city Sunday, when rioters went on a rampage in three city
districts.
The latest violence
was reported as the upper house of India's parliament passed a unanimous
resolution demanding greater government protection and relief for the victims
of the violence in Gujarat state. More than 900 people have been killed there
in the past five weeks.
Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee, whose Hindu Nationalist BJP party has been widely criticized
for failing to stem the sectarian bloodshed, said his government will move to
implement all provisions in the parliamentary motion.
The motion introduced
by the opposition Congress party calls for federal intervention to keep the
peace, as well as aid for tens of thousands of Muslims whose homes and
businesses have been destroyed in the past five weeks of
rioting.
Violence first
erupted in Gujarat when a Muslim mob set fire to a train carrying Hindu
activists and their families in late February. Fifty-eight people died in the
February 27 blaze.
