"War Emblem"
won the 128th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday, outpacing 17 other horses
in a crowded field at one of horse racing's most prestigious
events.
"Proud Citizen"
placed second, and "Perfect Drift" showed third.
The pace was slow,
with "War Emblem" leading the pack right out of the gate for a rare
"wire-to-wire" victory and the nearly $1 million prize.
The victory was
sweet for Saudi Prince Ahmed Salman, who purchased "War Emblem" only a month
ago for a reported $1 million after the horse won the Illinois Derby. Prince
Salman vowed when he entered racing in 1999 to win the derby within four
years.
"War Emblem" was
trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Victor Espinoza. The win was Baffert's
third in the Kentucky Derby -- he also trained the 1997 champion "Silver Charm"
and the 1998 winner "Real Quiet".
Security at the
race site at Churchill Downs in the U.S. state of Kentucky was intense, as this
was the first derby since the September 11 terrorist attacks. Ten of thousands
of people had gathered at the historic venue in Louisville, Kentucky, for the
traditional two-kilometer race.
No horse has
won all three Triple Crown races - the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the
Belmont Stakes - since "Affirmed" in 1978. The second leg of the Triple Crown,
the Preakness, is in two weeks in Baltimore, Maryland.
