Voters in
France head to the polls Sunday for a crucial run-off election between
incumbent President Jacques Chirac and far-right leader Jean-Marie Le
Pen.
Opinion polls
predict a sweeping victory for Mr. Chirac and both left and right French
newspapers are urging voters to re-elect Mr. Chirac.
The left-wing
daily "Liberation" printed the word "Yes" in big block letters on its cover
over a drawing of a ballot being cast for the current president. The
conservative daily "Le Figaro" featured the headline, "Chirac, of
course."
The vote comes
after two-weeks of protests following anti-immigrant Mr. Le Pen's surprise
success in first-round elections. Critics say he is racist and
anti-Semitic.
Leftist voters
say they are grudgingly planning to vote for the scandal-tainted Mr. Chirac,
just to keep Mr. Le Pen out of office.
Observers say
Mr. Le Pen capitalized on fears about crime, immigration and a loss of French
identity in an integrated Europe.
