Cuba's best known
political dissident, Vladimiro Roca, has been released from prison, after
serving all but two months of his five-year sentence for inciting
sedition.
Activists view the
release as a goodwill gesture to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who is to
visit the communist island one week from Sunday.
Mr. Roca, the son of
a founding father of Cuban communism, was arrested in 1997, along with three
other activists, for urging political reform. They were found guilty of
inciting sedition in a 1999 closed-door trial that drew international
condemnation.
Freedom for the
59-year-old Mr. Roca has topped the list of human rights requests by a series
of high-profile visitors to Cuba, including Pope John Paul.
Analysts say the
release had to be approved by the highest levels of the Cuban government,
including President Fidel Castro.
Witnesses say Mr.
Roca was met by his wife as he left the prison in Ariza, in Cienfuegos
province.
