The U.S. military has
flown another group of terrorist suspects to the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba - the second such planeload to arrive there in two
days.
Officials would not
provide any details about the 32 prisoners or say where they were flown from,
though the heavily-guarded Guantanamo facility is being used to house some of
the Taleban and al-Qaida fighters captured in Afghanistan.
Construction crews
have been building additional cells at Guantanamo, and the latest arrivals
Friday bring to more than 330 the number of prisoners being held
there.
The prisoner transfer
coincides with ongoing operations in Afghanistan to hunt down remaining
al-Qaida and Taleban fighters.
Coalition troops are
working with the Pakistani military to prevent al-Qaida and Taleban forces from
regrouping in the vast Afghan-Pakistan border region. Among those taking part
are British Royal Marines, who are patrolling previously unsearched territory
in southeastern Afghanistan in a mission dubbed "Operation
Snipe."
A U.S. military
spokesman also confirmed that Canadian forces had moved to Bagram Air Base from
Kandahar to prepare for future operations.
