Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is vowing to smash Palestinian militants, saying Israel will not compromise with those ready to die to kill innocent civilians.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade responded quickly Sunday, vowing to unleash hundreds of suicide bombers to attack Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and other Israeli cities unless Mr. Sharon pulls his forces out of Ramallah, where Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is penned up in his destroyed West Bank headquarters compound.

Also in Ramallah, Palestinians say Israeli troops opened fire on 30 unarmed civilians, killing or wounding a number of them.

And late Sunday, at least 100 Israeli tanks stormed into the West Bank Palestinian town of Qalqilya and were reported massing near Bethlehem.

Earlier Sunday two Palestinian suicide bombings killed at least 14 Israelis and injured dozens more in Haifa and the West Bank Jewish settlement of Efrat, near Hebron. The bombings were the fourth and fifth suicide attacks against Israel in five days.

The militant group Hamas claimed responsibility for the bombing at a Haifa restaurant.

A spokesman for President Bush, who is at ranch in Texas, strongly condemned the latest suicide bombings and again called on Mr. Arafat to stop such attacks. The spokesman recalled a statement by Mr. Bush Saturday urging Mr. Arafat to condemn the terrorist attacks in Arabic and to use his own forces to prevent further attacks.
