Indonesian
President Megawati Sukarnoputri has begun a visit to North Korea, where she is
expected to urge its leader, Kim Jong Il, to resume talks with South Korea and
the United States.
Ms. Megawati
arrived in Pyongyang Thursday, from China - the first stop on a two-week Asian
tour. She was greeted by the president of North Korea's legislature, Kim Yong
Nam, and the two then had what North Korea's official news agency described as
friendly talks.
The Indonesian
leader is said to be carrying a message from South Korean President Kim
Dae-jung, appealing for the resumption of inter-Korean dialogue and for
Pyongyang to reopen talks with the United States. Ms. Megawati is the first
Indonesian leader to visit North Korea since her late father, President
Sukarno, went there in 1964. He and founding North Korean leader Kim Il Sung
were members of the non-aligned movement in the 1950's and '60's.
One of Ms.
Megawati's first appointments after arriving in Pyongyang was to pay her
respects at Kim Il Sung's mausoleum. She and his son, Kim Jong Il, are to meet
later in her visit.
