President Bush has
signed into law campaign finance legislation that is aimed at reducing the
influence of money in U.S. politics.
White House spokesman
Ari Fleischer said Mr. Bush signed the bill with little fanfare Wednesday in
the Oval Office, before leaving for fundraising stops in two U.S.
states.
Mr. Fleischer said
Congressional leaders were notified that the bill was signed. He said the
president feels the legislation makes significant reforms, but still has flaws.
The legislation overhauls U.S. campaign finance laws, largely banning
unregulated contributions, also known as "soft money," to national political
parties.
The president is
spending the day in South Carolina and Georgia, attending two fundraising
functions for two Republican Senate candidates. He is also speaking about
so-called "first responders" - police, firemen and emergency medical workers.
He then heads to the U.S. state of Texas for a four-day Easter vacation at the
Bush ranch.
