Fresh aftershocks are endangering relief efforts as international aid mounts in the effort to help victims of an earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan on Monday.

A Reuters News Agency correspondent traveled with Afghan interim leader Hamid Karzai to see the destruction firsthand in the Baghlan province, about 120 kilometers north of Kabul. Three significant tremors - registering 5.2 on the Richter scale at a Pakistani seismic center - occurred during his visit.

Afghan officials have said the quake and a series of aftershocks left at least 2,000 people dead and another 4,000 injured. It destroyed about 10,000 homes. The death toll is expected to rise.

A major town in the region - Nahrin - and several nearby villages are reported to have been leveled by the earthquake which, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, measured 6.0 on the Richter scale. Many countries - Russia, India, Turkey, Germany, Czech Republic and Japan -are rushing emergency aid to Baghlan province Afghanistan.
