Intelligence Agencies To Team Up Against Terrorism VOA News 26 Mar 2002 16:38 UTC Security agencies from 39 countries attending an international conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, have agreed to create a permanent working group to coordinate efforts in the fight against international terrorism. Summing up the results of the two-day meeting on terrorism and organized crime - the first of its kind - Russian Federal Security Service Director Nikolai Patrushev said that in different countries the intelligence, security and law enforcement agencies have different interests. But he said when it comes to terrorism, they have the same view. The Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States organized the Saint Petersburg conference. Groups attending included the U.S. agenices the CIA and the FBI, the British MI5 and delegates from China and European and Central Asian nations. The anti-terrorism meetings continue in Saint Petersburg with an inter-parliamentary conference bringing together delegations from the members of the Council of Europe and the states of the former Soviet Union.
