More clashes between
Hindus and Muslims in India's western Gujarat state have left four people dead
in the worst sectarian violence in two weeks.
Opposing mobs defied
an overnight curfew in the region's main city, Ahmedabad, and fought until dawn
Monday.
To the south, in
Baroda, two Muslim men were stabbed to death by a Hindu mob while under police
escort for their safety. A police official has been suspended over the
incident. The victims had fled to a government-run camp on Friday to escape
sectarian violence.
Two other men died in
police shootings in Baroda.
The latest clashes
follow riots in Gujarat that killed more than 700 people, most of them Muslims.
Ahmedabad has been the focus of most of the violence, which is India's worst
sectarian strife since 1992.
Meanwhile, police say
they have arrested a Muslim activist (Haji Bilal) who is the chief suspect in a
train fire last month that killed 58 Hindu activists and triggered the wave of
riots.
A dispute over a site
sacred to both Hindus and Muslims in the northern city of Ayodhya is behind the
violence.
