Secretary of State
Colin Powell says the United States has no plans to attack either Iraq or
Iran.
Mr. Powell, in a
French television interview Friday, said there are no attack plans on the
president's desk from either him or the Secretary of Defense for either Iraq or
Iran.
President Bush told a
news conference Wednesday that the United States would deal with Iraq's
President Saddam Hussein. Mr. Bush accuses Baghdad of developing weapons of
mass destruction and has described Iraq as part of "an axis of evil" including
Iran and North Korea.
In Barcelona, German
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder also downplayed talk of an attack on Iraq. He told
the European summit there are no American plans to intervene militarily against
Baghdad. He also said there is a clear commitment by the U.S. to consult with
its European partners on the issue.
In Bonn, a government
spokeswoman said Germany would not participate in an attack on Iraq or any
other country without a mandate from the United Nations.
Turkey's Prime
Minister Bulent Ecevit, a guest at the Barcelona summit, warned that military
action against Iraq would cause serious upheaval in the Middle
East.
