Vice President
Dick Cheney, continuing his 11-nation Middle East tour, is in Yemen Thursday to
discuss the U.S.-led war against terrorism.
Mr. Cheney
arrived in the capital, Sanaa, aboard a U.S. military plane, under extremely
tight security. He was met at the airport by Yemen's Vice President Abd-Rabbu
Mansur and was quickly ushered into the terminal for talks with President Ali
Abdullah Saleh.
U.S. officials
are concerned that some al-Qaida terrorists fleeing Afghanistan may try to take
refuge in Yemen's rugged mountains. U.S. military officers are already in
Yemen, helping government troops hunt down local al-Qaida
terrorists.
Wednesday in
Egypt, Mr. Cheney said the next objective in the war on terrorism is to prevent
terrorists, and regimes that sponsor terror, from threatening America and its
friends and allies.
There has been
growing speculation that Iraq could be the next target in the U.S. - led
war.
President Bush has
said he will not allow Iraq to threaten the world's future by developing
weapons of mass destruction.
Yemen is the
third stop on Mr. Cheney's Middle East tour. He visited Jordan, before
traveling to Egypt. From Yemen he is scheduled to go to
Oman.
