Marking the
sixth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, two powerful beacons
of light are now soaring above the New York City skyline.
They are meant to
fill the void where the two destroyed World Trade Center buildings once stood.
The lights were turned on late Monday.
At the White House
Monday, President Bush used the anniversary pay tribute to terrorist victims
and said the anti-terror war has just entered its second
phase.
Standing in front of
the flags of 170 nations, Mr. Bush called on the world to deny sanctuary to
terrorists. He also singled out for praise Germany, Denmark, and Afghanistan --
nations that have lost soldiers in the war.
Earlier Monday,
New Yorkers observed two moments of silence at the exact time six months ago
that terrorist hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center towers.
Bells tolled in
Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where a hijacked plane apparently headed for
Washington crashed. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld led a memorial service at
the Pentagon, which was also struck by a hijacked jet.
