U.S. forces continue to seek out and destroy al-Qaida and Taleban positions in Afghanistan. The Pentagon says hundreds of enemy fighters have been killed, while holding out in the mountains south of Gardez. In the face of the biggest ground assault of the war so far, U.S. officials say Al-Qaida resistance is weakening. But, they say the operation is far from over.

Charles Heyman is the Editor of Jane's World Armies, a series of publications that provides analysis of every army in the world. He tells VOA's Pat Bodnar the U.S. and allies have anticipated a ground battle with the remnants of the Taleban and Al-Qaida forces, who Mr. Heyman says, still number in the thousands.
