A jury in the
southern U.S. state of Georgia has convicted 1960s radical H-Rap Brown
of killing a sheriff's deputy and wounding another in a March 2000
shootout.
The jurors
deliberated for two days before finding the former Black Panthers
member guilty, Saturday. Brown, a Muslim cleric who now goes by the
name of Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, could face execution or life-in-prison
following the conviction.
He was found guilty
on 13 counts, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of
a firearm by a convicted felon. The surviving sheriff's deputy,
Aldranon English testified that Brown opened fire, killing his
partner, when they tried to serve Brown with a warrant. Deputy English
was wounded.
Brown's trial had
been postponed after the September 11 terrorist attacks because the
judge feared anti-Muslim sentiment would prevent him from receiving a
fair trial.
Brown's supporters
argue the trial is part of a government conspiracy to destroy the
cleric, who served five-years in prison in the 1970s for his role in a
robbery that ended in a shootout with New York Police.
