Jordan has welcomed President Bush's decision to send Middle East special envoy Anthony Zinni back to the region, calling it an important first step to halt the growing Israeli-Palestinian violence.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher said Friday he hopes General Zinni will be able to secure a cease-fire. He said Israeli government aggression must stop and the Israeli demand for seven days of calm before negotiating is no longer logical.

Mr. Muasher's remarks came as he departed to Cairo for a meeting with other Arab foreign ministers.

He said the Saudi peace initiative will be on the top of the agenda of Arab League meetings that get under way Saturday.
