German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democratic Party has made gains in local elections in opposition-run Bavaria.
The state capital, Munich, retained Social Democratic mayor Christian Ude, who won almost 65 percent of the vote. The candidate of the Christian Social Union -- which dominates political life in Bavaria -- won fewer than 30 percent.
In Nuremberg and Augsburg, Bavaria's second- and third-largest cities, incumbent mayors from the Christian Democratic Union were forced into run-off elections with Social Democratic Party challengers.
Almost nine-million voters were eligible to cast ballots in more than 2,000 cities and towns across Bavaria.
The vote was seen as a test of strength for Bavaria's governor, Edmund Stoiber, head of the Christian Social Union. Mr. Stoiber is expected to be the main opposition candidate for chancellor in September's national elections.
