Most Asian stock markets closed higher Monday, with the key market in Tokyo surging following last week's gains on Wall Street.
Tokyo's Nikkei index gained nearly 6 percent (638 points), to close at 11,450 - its highest close in seven months. The Nikkei gained more than 2 percent Friday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, rose 2.6 percent (279 points), to finish at 10,704. The Hang Seng fell a fraction of 1 percent Friday.
Elsewhere, share prices were sharply higher in Singapore and Taipei, while markets in Manila, Sydney and Seoul registered smaller gains. Share prices also rose in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Bangkok. Share prices were lower in Wellington and Bombay.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 132.24 yen in Tokyo, down 0.95 yen from late Friday in Tokyo.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose $1.18, to close at $299.05 an ounce.
