A Zimbabwe Supreme Court judge has resigned without explanation just days after striking down the country's new election law.

Justice Ahmed Ebrahim is the latest judge to leave the bench after issuing a high-profile ruling against the government of President Robert Mugabe. Other magistrates have resigned in the past year under government pressure.

On Wednesday, Justice Ebrahim, writing for the Supreme Court, invalidated an election law that would have given sweeping new powers to government polling officials.

Meanwhile, the president and his chief opponent Morgan Tsvangirai have kicked off the last week of campaigning ahead of what is expected to be a close presidential election.

The candidates held separate rallies Saturday in Bulawayo, the country's second-largest city. Mr. Mugabe defended his government's policies of seizing land from white farmers and giving it to blacks, who largely support the ruling party.

Mr. Tsvangirai denounced the government's violent campaign against white farmers and the opposition. He also promised to create a truth and reconciliation commission, if elected, to probe what he called politically motivated murders.
