Asian Stock Markets End the Week Mixed

Asian stock markets ended the week mixed Friday, with the key market in Tokyo rising sharply.

The Nikkei index rose more than 2 percent (224 points), to close at 10,812. The Nikkei was up almost 4 percent on Thursday.

Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, fell 0.5 percent (57 points), to finish at 10,425. The Hang Seng lost almost 2 percent on Thursday.

In Singapore, the key Straits Times index was up 0.5 percent (6 points), to finish at 1,722.

Elsewhere, the market in Bombay rose more than 3 percent, while Bangkok was up 2 percent and Kuala Lumpur rose 1 percent. China's Shanghai index was down 1 percent.

The U.S. dollar was mixed against the major Asian currencies in late regional trading. In Tokyo, the dollar was quoted at 133.61 yen, down slightly from Thursday.

The price of gold in Hong Kong was unchanged, at $296.65 an ounce.
