The United Nations Security Council has welcomed a pledge by the leaders of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to seek peace along their common borders.

The Security Council, in a statement released Thursday, called on the three West African countries to put the agreement into action as soon as possible.

Security officials from the three nations are scheduled to meet in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, on Monday, to discuss implementation of the agreement.

The Presidents of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone on Wednesday pledged to take steps to end cross-border insurgencies and to revive regional cooperation. The three leaders met in Morocco at the invitation of King Mohammed VI.

Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone have accused each other of supporting rebel movements, destabilizing the region in recent years.
