The International Monetary Fund is likely to decide on a new loan package to Ecuador by April.

IMF spokesman Thomas Dawson says an IMF team is currently in Quito, the Ecuadorian capital, to conduct talks on the new package. The discussions are focusing on setting appropriate fiscal targets and implementing structural reforms to improve Ecuador's productivity and competitiveness.

Ecuador received a $286 million loan from the IMF in April, 2000, after the country went into a financial crisis that forced it to default on its debt and replace its currency with the U.S. dollar. The new IMF loan is expected to be of a similar size.
