Usually 2 or more calendar days worth of news bulletins are packaged together and will appear on this web page depending upon the amount and character of the news. Each page which packages several days of news bulletins has a unique designation in its name, "VOA_n", and a date "01Feb2003". The "n" is a number between 1 and 10, or a bit larger. You can expect the number "1" to contain the first few days of news bulletins for a given month. Then the next number "2" will contain the next few days and so on. Neither the number or the date indicate the exact date of the news bulletins. However the date "01Feb2003" indicates the month of the news bulletins. The entire month of news bulletins is stored under a directory on the server having the date name "01Feb2003". Typically the population of this web page with news bulletins may trail the actual date of those bulletins by no more than one or more days.

Note: Each news article is set out in 3 colored areas. The yellow area provides the headline. The blue area contains location context, HFY article summary, HFY comment, time and credits, and email/printer and streaming audio Urls. The brown area contains the unaltered news item as originally published by our sources such as VOA, BBC, DOD, and others. Some variation to this format may occur.

Saddam Hussein raid site excavated

Middle East - Iraq - @Lieutenant-General David McKiernan Baghdad -
Re-examining Site bombed to kill Saddam Hussein

The site was attacked in an air strike on 7 April, amid reports that Saddam Hussein and his two sons were meeting in a Mansour district restaurant there. Devastation after Mansour air strike, 7 April 2003
The Mansour raid left a huge crater
US troops are re-examining the site of a wartime attempt to kill Saddam Hussein because it had not been properly checked before, the top US commander in Iraq has said.

Lieutenant-General David McKiernan said previous searches of the site in Baghdad's Mansour district had not been thorough enough.

The site was attacked in an air strike on 7 April, amid reports that Saddam Hussein and his two sons were meeting in a restaurant there.

Several houses were destroyed in the raid, which came two days before Baghdad fell to US forces.

Saddam ran away - He's hiding
Munther Meki, grocer

There has been no conclusive evidence so far to determine whether the former Iraqi leader is dead or alive.

Video allegedly taken on 9 April showed Saddam Hussein waving to supporters in the Azamiyah district.

And last month the Sydney Morning Herald published details of an audio tape, purportedly made by Saddam Hussein, urging Iraqis to fight the US-led invasion.

At least 14 Iraqi civilians are believed to have been killed in the attack in Mansour, an upscale area of the capital.

General McKiernan said any forensic evidence found at the bomb site would be sent either to US bases in Qatar or to the United States. But he said the army did not have a sample of Saddam Hussein's DNA to check it against.

He did not know whether other parts of the US military or intelligence services had a sample.

The site has been left largely undisturbed in the weeks since the air strike. But now dozens of army engineers are digging through the rubble looking for human remains.

Nearby residents said they believed Saddam Hussein did survive the attack.

"Saddam ran away. He's hiding," grocer Munther Meki told AP news agency.

Bremer, Iraqi Political Leaders Discuss Country's Future
.

.
Middle East - Iraq - Baghdad - @U.S. Administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer -
Consensus on Iraq's Political Future

Friday, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, met behind closed doors with the leaders of dozens of political parties that have emerged in Iraq to discuss his decision to scrap a national convention that he had said would take place in July. Mr. Bremer wants instead to establish a political council which would be the interim administration in Iraq and made up of 25 to 30 people who would be considered ministers and would oversee all aspects of Iraq's internal affairs. However, and in accord with a UN Security Council resolution, the ultimate authority in Iraq will remain with the coalition until a new Iraqi government is chosen following nationwide elections some time in the future.

The heads of several political parties in Iraq met Friday with the top U.S. official in the country in an effort to try to reach a consensus on Iraq's political future.

Dozens of political parties have emerged in Iraq since Saddam Hussein was ousted from power two months ago.

Friday, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, met behind closed doors with the leaders of several of those parties to discuss his decision to scrap a national convention that he had said would take place in July.

Mr. Bremer said earlier this week he wants to establish a political council made up of 25 to 30 people. An aide to Mr. Bremer said the issue of the council was the primary reason for Friday's meeting with the political leaders.

The council would be the interim administration in Iraq and its members would be considered ministers and would oversee all aspects of Iraq's internal affairs.

However, in accordance with a resolution passed by the U.N. Security Council last month, the ultimate authority in Iraq will remain with the coalition until a new Iraqi government is chosen following nationwide elections. An official with Mr. Bremmer's office told VOA the process could take as long as two years.

The council would also be responsible for working with a separate, much larger group of more than 100 Iraqis that would draft a new Iraqi constitution, setting the stage for a national referendum followed by nationwide elections.

Mr. Bremer's decision to scrap the national convention has angered several political parties in Iraq. He had called for it when he first arrived in Iraq almost one month ago. At the time, he said the convention would elect delegates who would then draft a new constitution.

One of the groups that has expressed its opposition to the cancellation of the convention is the Iraqi National Conference. The party's leadership is made up primarily of former Iraqi exiles who have returned to Iraq and want a role in the country's political future.

On Wednesday, the INC promised to go ahead with plans to hold a national conference without U.S. participation, saying the United States can't cancel a conference that is led by Iraqis.

Will be Discovered in Iraq
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 6, 2003 More searching in Iraq will uncover Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said following a meeting with House members yesterday.
Rumsfeld and Joint Chiefs Chairman Air Force Gen. Richard Myers also said that three divisions' worth of troops from other nations will join coalition forces in Iraq. This will put less pressure on American forces, DoD officials said.
Rumsfeld said he, the chairman and House members discussed charges that the Pentagon hyped intelligence information on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program. Rumsfeld, who spoke to reporters outside the hearing room, said U.S. intelligence has been good in Operation Iraqi Freedom. "(The intelligence has) been enriched as they've gone through this past period of years, and that I believe that the presentation made by Secretary Powell was accurate and will be proved to be accurate," he said. Old Vet Drums Up
Parade for New Vet
WASHINGTON, June 5, 2003 Self-proclaimed "neophyte parade planner" Paul C. Rock is on a mission. The Vietnam veteran and president of a Vietnam veterans' support group is working to ensure that his son and his fellow troops returning home from Iraq get the tribute they deserve.
Rock is the proud father of a lance corporal in the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Lance Cpl. Zachary Rock, 19, served four months in Iraq. His dad decided he wanted to organize a parade to honor his son and the community's other veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Rock got a permit for the parade to be held this Sunday, June 8, in downtown Longmont, Colo. Local officials are slated to close Main Street to all traffic.
Even though he'd never planned a parade before, Rock set out by designing flyers and finding a local print shop to make copies for free. More

Coalition to Aid U.N.'s IAEA At Iraqi Nuclear Storage Site
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 5, 2003 Coalition forces will assist International Atomic Energy Agency officials as they inspect the Iraqi nuclear storage facility near Baghdad, DoD officials said today.
The IAEA inspectors will help coalition officials determine if uranium or nuclear by-products are missing from the site.
IAEA inspectors last visited Location C at the Tuwaitha facility in December 2002. The inspectors were there as part of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty annual inspection.
Site Charlie as officials call the storage area is about 12 miles southeast of Baghdad. Radiological materiel mostly "yellow cake," a naturally occurring uranium ore was stored at the facility. Officials said about 500 metric tons of the materiel were stored in Tuwaitha, along with very small quantities of low-enriched and depleted uranium.
DoD officials said reports from the area indicate that on or about March 10, Iraqi forces guarding the site took off. More

Coalition Troops Help Iraq Rebuild 1 Project at a Time
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 5, 2003 Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has stated that every day conditions in Iraq are getting a bit better.
They are not getting better by themselves, but are doing so through thousands of small acts by coalition personnel assisting the Iraqi population. The aid runs the gamut from issuing measles vaccinations to paving roads.
Coalition personnel do this in addition to providing security in the country and continuing the search for the former regime's weapons of mass destruction.
U.S. Central Command issues a daily list of the efforts coalition forces make to aid Iraq's recovery. Here are just a few recent examples:
Troops conducted the 10th "Task Force Neighborhood" mission in the Al Rashid District of Baghdad with the assistance of 50 hired Iraqis. These "task forces" go into neighborhoods and take care of small projects. For example, in Al Rashid the group repaired four doors at a girls' middle school. They rewired and connected electrical power to the district council building and hauled away 280 tons of rubble from behind the building. More

Officials said an unknown assailant fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the men. Names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
