A Colombian journalist has been shot several times while walking to his office in the city of Manizales, about 200 kilometers northwest of Bogota.

Police say a gunman opened fire on Orlando Sierra Wednesday. He is now hospitalized in serious condition.

Officials say Mr. Sierra, a deputy editor with La Patria newspaper, had received threats, although the motive for the attack is not known. Mr. Patria wrote a Sunday column for the newspaper.

Authorities say the suspected gunman was arrested. His identity has not been released. International media groups say Colombia is one of the world's most dangerous places for journalists.
