The Roman Catholic Church in Ireland has agreed to pay $110 million to children who were sexually abused by clergy in decades past.

A stream of accusations against priests, monks and nuns has resulted in more than 20 convictions for molesting children. Much of the abuse took place in state-funded, church-run schools.

In exchange for the church's financial commitment, the government is extending immunity to the clergy from future civil action.

Sex abuse campaigners and other critics of the deal say the amount of money is inadequate.
