Philippine troops have rescued a German man wounded in an ambush while he and a Western companion were trekking on Mount Pinatubo.
Military officials say Segfried Whitman was picked up by an air force helicopter Thursday. He is said to have alerted authorities of Wednesday's attack, carried out by unidentified assailants, through mobile phone text messages sent to a friend.
Rescue teams are still searching for Mr. Whitman's companion, whose nationality is unclear. The companion is feared dead.
Last year, a group of U.S. Navy personnel and their guides were fired upon by gunmen believed to be communist rebels on the slopes of Mount Pinatubo, which is about 80 kilometers north of Manila.
