Germany says it is considering the deployment of reconnaissance planes to Kenya as part of the U.S.-led war against terrorism.

A German military spokesman says a team is already in Kenya to assess whether to deploy three reconnaissance planes and 100 troops to the Indian ocean port of Mombassa.

Germany has already deployed troops and warships to Djibouti to help patrol sea lanes in the Red Sea area.

The United States fears the lack of central authority in Somalia, Kenya's eastern neighbor, could make it a haven for terrorists linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network.
