China says it will spend almost $300 million to build or upgrade blood centers, as it tries to prevent a major AIDS epidemic.
The official state media say 14 domestic and overseas firms have now contracted to supply blood station equipment to the centers across China. Those centers will now be able to test for AIDS, hepatitis and other blood-transmitted diseases.
Last year, China publicly announced its fight against AIDS, after state media exposed the rampant spread of the AIDS virus in the rural central province of Henan.
Beijing says the number of confirmed AIDs and AIDS virus cases at about 28,000. But health officials say the more likely number is more than 600,000.
