Indonesian officials say three days of torrential rain has caused flooding that killed at least 33 people across the country, including at least five on the resort island of Bali.
Thursday brought some sunshine and bright skies, and traffic eased slightly on the roads in the capital, Jakarta, which was flooded in many locations. Thousands of residents in the city were still being housed at mosques, churches and government offices because their homes were flooded. Electrical power was still out in much of the capital.
Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri toured some of the hardest-hit areas Thursday in a rubber dinghy. She and other officials handed out food and medicine to the victims, most of whom live in slums near Jakarta's clogged and polluted rivers.
Weather forecasters say more heavy rain is expected through next month, when Indonesia's annual wet season will come to an end.
