Russian-born center Alexei Yashin scored three goals in the first period to lead the New York Islanders to a 6-3 win over the New York Rangers in National Hockey League action Wednesday.

Yashin's hat trick in the cross-town match up ended his scoring drought of only one goal in 15 games. Manny Malhotra and Jeff Toms scored for the Rangers.

In Montreal, Sean O'Donnell scored midway through overtime as the Boston Bruins edged the Canadiens 4-3. The Bruins rallied from a two-goal deficit late in the third period to force the extra session. The victory stretches Boston's winning streak to three games.

In Calgary, the Flames beat the league-leading Detroit Red Wings for the third time this season. Calgary's Marc Savard scored three goals in the 4-3 victory.

Meanwhile, Pavol Demitra scored a pair of goals - including the game winner in the second period in the visiting St. Louis Blues' 4-1 rout of the slumping Washington Capitals. The Caps enter the all-star break on a four-game skid.
