Stock Market floor
Most Asian stock markets closed higher Thursday, with the region's largest market, Tokyo, rising following Wednesday's U.S. stock gains on Wall Street.

Tokyo's Nikkei index rose a fraction of 1 percent (78 points), to close at 9,997. The Nikkei fell 1 percent Wednesday.

Bucking the trend, Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, fell a fraction of 1 percent (32 points), to finish at 10,725. The Hang Seng fell more than 2 percent Wednesday.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Manila. Markets also registered gains in Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, Wellington and Bombay. Share prices were lower in Seoul.

The U.S. dollar was quoted at 132.94 yen in Tokyo, up 0.18 yen from late Wednesday in Tokyo, and also above its overnight New York level of 132.74 yen.

The price of gold in Hong Kong fell 70 cents, to close at $281.95 an ounce.
