Colombian authorities say all 92 people on board an Ecuadorean passenger plane were killed Monday when the jet slammed into the side of a snow-capped volcano in southern Colombia.
Officials say searchers found the wreckage of the Boeing 727 Tuesday, and that it was scattered over a wide area on the Nevado de Cumbal volcano. The ill-fated jet belonged to Ecuador's state-run TAME airline and was registered as Flight 120. The aircraft was on a domestic flight from the capital, Quito, to the border town of Tulcan when it lost radio contact with air traffic controllers.
TAME airline officials say they do not know what caused the accident, although the Associated Press quotes authorities as saying the plane may have been off course in fog as it approached Tulcan.
Many of the passengers were believed to be Colombians traveling to Cali, Colombia, the flight's final destination. Two Spaniards and one Cuban also were on board the doomed aircraft.
The ill-fated jet was the second Ecuadorean aircraft to crash in Colombia in the past two weeks. On January 17, a plane belonging to Ecuador's state-owned oil company, Petroecuador, crashed in southern Colombia. All 26 people on board were killed.
