President Bush says the U.S.-led war against terrorism has saved the people of Afghanistan from starvation and freed the country from brutal oppression.
In his State of the Union address Mr. Bush welcomed interim Afghan leader Hamid Karzai as the leader of a liberated Afghanistan.
Noting that the American flag flies again over the U.S. embassy in Kabul, he said America and Afghanistan are now allies against terror, and will be partners in rebuilding that country.
Mr. Bush also welcomed the new Afghan Minister of Women's Affairs, Doctor Sima Samar.
He said women are now free in Afghanistan - recalling that only a few months ago mothers and daughters there were captives in their own homes and forbidden from working or going to school.
