Britain's Foreign Office says it is concerned about allegations that Saudi Arabian secret police tortured British citizens to try to force confessions to a bombing campaign against westerners.
The officials were reacting to reports in The Guardian newspaper Wednesday that three recently released men say they were physically and psychologically abused after being detained by Saudi authorities last year.
The three Britons, who were charged with alcohol offenses, were granted amnesties last month. They are among a group of westerners detained during a series of explosions in Saudi Arabia, which began in November 2000 and left a British and a U.S. citizen dead and several other people injured.
Saudi authorities have blamed the blasts on a multi-million dollar alcohol smuggling business. Several westerners, including British nationals, a Canadian and a Belgian are still being held in Saudi Arabia.
Britain's Foreign Office says it is investigating the allegations and pursuing the cases of those still detained.
