Top seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland has brushed aside German player Marlene Weingartner to reach the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific tennis tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

Hingis took an early 3-0 lead at Tokyo's Metropolitan Gymnasium and won the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. She will take on the winner of a match between Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn and sixth seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria.

Also Wednesday, fourth-seeded French player Sandrine Testud overcame a first set loss to reach the quarterfinals with a three-set win over Austrian Barbara Schett (4-6, 7-5, 7-5).

Seventh-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia advanced to a second round showdown with countrywoman Anna Kournikova by defeating Japan's Saori Obata in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). American Alexandra Stevenson set up a second round match with South Africa's Amanda Coetzer by beating Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia in straight sets (6-4, 6-1).

In other matches, Silvia Farina-Elia of Italy defeated Tatiana Panova of Russia in straight sets (6-4, 7-5). Els Callens of Belgium ousted Japan's Ai Sugiyama in three sets (1-6, 6-2, 6-4). Anne Kermer of Luxembourg scored a three-set win over Russian Elena Likhovtseva (4-6, 6-1, 6-3).
