Dick Cheney, wife Lynn, George W. Bush

President Bush wished a happy 61st birthday to Dick Cheney, who Mr. Bush described as the finest vice president ever.

Mr. Cheney's wife Lynne and his staff sang "Happy Birthday" to the vice president and surprised him with a chocolate cake at his office in the Old Executive Office Building, next door to the White House.

President Bush strolled over from his office to wish Mr. Cheney well and was rewarded with the first piece of birthday cake.

But Mr. Cheney - a multiple heart attack victim who has been placed on a strict diet - did not eat any of the cake, at least while reporters and television cameras were in the room.
