US Stocks Flat

U.S. stocks are little changed in early trading, as investors are not willing to make any big bets on equities before the decision on interest rates later Wednesday by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 5 points at 9,623, while the broad market indicator - the S&P 500 - is up a fraction of a point at 1,101. But the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index is down about 7 points at 1,886.

In London, the Financial Times Index is down 49 points (about 1 percent) at 5,083, while in Paris the Cac 40 Index is down 66 points (1.5 percent) at 4,410. The Dax Index in Frankfurt is 58 points (more than 1 percent) lower at 5,026.

Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei-Index fell 107 points (more than 1 percent) to close at 9,919, while in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index lost 257 points (more than 2 percent) to end the day at 10,757.

The price of gold in London is $280.95 an ounce - up $3.05.

The dollar has turned mostly higher against the other major currencies.
