Asian stock markets closed mixed Tuesday, with the key market in Tokyo lower following news of record unemployment in Japan.
Tokyo's Nikkei index fell nearly 2 percent (195 points), to close at 10,026. The drop comes one day after the government said unemployment had reached 5.6 percent in December. The Nikkei rose a fraction of 1 percent Monday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, rose more than 2 percent (246 points), to finish at 11,014. The Hang Seng fell slightly Monday.
Elsewhere, share prices were sharply lower in Taipei, and lower in Manila, Seoul and Bombay. Share prices were higher in Wellington, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur. Markets also registered gains in Jakarta and Bangkok.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133 yen in Tokyo, down 1.66 yen from late Monday in Tokyo, and also below its late Monday New York level of 133.46 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong fell $1.60, to close at $278.15 an ounce.
