Russia's foreign ministry has accused the United States of impeding progress on disarmament, saying Washington should not limit its international diplomatic efforts to combating terrorism.

In a statement released Tuesday the ministry denounced Washington's decision to scrap the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty with Moscow.

The statement also criticized the U.S. for hesitating to move forward with nuclear weapons reductions under the Start II treaty.

Russia and U.S. defense officials held a first round of talks on nuclear weapons cuts in Washington earlier this month. However, the talks ended in disagreement after the United States indicated it wanted to store rather than destroy the weapons.
