A special session marking the 53rd anniversary of the Israeli parliament turned ugly Monday when the Knesset speaker denounced Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory.
Speaker Avraham Burg said the occupation corrupts. He said the cycle of terrorism, retaliation, and death has made Israel a cruel nation unwilling to consider alternatives to violence.
Many lawmakers loudly booed Mr. Burg and suggested he make his speech in Ramallah - Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's headquarters.
Prime Minster Ariel Sharon responded by saying democracy must defend itself against terror and not bow to those he calls murderers.
