The family of an anti-corruption activist jailed in China has urged President Bush to seek his release when the American leader visits Beijing next month.

In an open letter obtained by the French News Agency, the family says it hopes Mr. Bush will take advantage of his trip to China to demand Chinese authorities release An Jun for medical reasons.

A court in central Henan province is said to have convicted Mr. An of subversion and jailed him for four years for his role in establishing an independent anti-corruption watchdog group.

Mr. An's family says he has been hospitalized several times in prison for heart disease and continues to be very weak.
