American bobsledder Todd Hays, one of the U.S. team's leading hopes for a medal in the Salt Lake City Olympics, has been stripped of victory in a World Cup race after his brakeman tested positive for drugs.

Pavle Jovanovic tested positive for metabolites of an anabolic steroid (19-norandrostenedione), December 29, during the U.S. Olympic trials. He has been suspended from the Olympic games but denies taking the drugs and plans to appeal his suspension.

The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation stripped Hays of 29 points he earned for winning a World Cup race in which Jovanovic was the brakeman in Saint Moritz, Switzerland earlier this month.

The decision dropped Hays from a tie for third in the overall World Cup standings to 10th place.
