The U.N. Security Council has discussed conflict resolution in Africa and ways the international community can help end wars ravaging the continent.
The speakers at Tuesday's meeting agreed that the international community must play a larger role if it wants to stop the many armed conflicts in Africa.
Zambian Foreign Minister Katile Columba said African countries and the international community have to work together as partners to effectively resolve conflicts.
The British representative at the meeting, Valerie Amos, said armed conflict in Africa has led to large-scale displacement of people and environmental degradation, and has provided opportunities for international criminal and terrorist activities.
The representative for Mauritius, the current holder of the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council, called Tuesday's open debate.
