Indian officials say police have killed two Pakistani nationals suspected of participating in last week's attack on the American cultural center in Calcutta.

Interior Secretary Kamal Pande told reporters that the two men were shot during an early morning raid on what he called a "terrorist hideout" in the eastern state of Jharkhand.

Mr. Pande said one of the men died on the spot, while the other confessed to his role in last week's attack before dying in a hospital. He added that further investigations are being carried out, but said there is no doubt in his mind that Pakistani nationals and Pakistani-based groups were involved in the attack. F our policemen were killed when attackers on a motorbike fired at police guarding the American Center on a busy street in Calcutta.

Indian officials have said a Dubai-based member of a group with alleged links to Pakistani intelligence claimed responsibility. Pakistan denies any involvement.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have been high since a deadly attack by gunmen on the Indian parliament in December.
